What is the entry fee for the Runyon 5K?
$45 through June 30
$55 from July 1 through August 14
$65 from August 15 through August 19
Will there be a Kids Fun Run this year?
Due to logistical complications, a Kids Fun Run will not be held in 2016. However, kids ages 5-12 can participate in the 5K for a reduced entry fee of $25.
Is there a minimum age to participate?
Yes, participants in the Runyon 5K must be at least 5 years old on event day. For safety reasons, children younger than 5 years of age, including those held in child carriers by an adult participant or in strollers, will not be allowed on the route. Please do not attempt to enter the Great Hall or Gate 4 with a stroller – you will be redirected to the spectator viewing area where strollers can be accommodated.
When is the deadline to register for the Runyon 5K?
Online registration will close on Friday, August 19.
Can I make a donation in addition to paying the entry fee?
Yes and we encourage you to do so! You will have the option to make an additional donation to support cancer research when registering.
Is any portion of my entry fee tax-deductible?
No. The entry fee helps cover the cost of producing the Runyon 5K, and includes a participant t-shirt, medal and goody bag. This is why fundraising is so important! All donations made or raised above and beyond your entry fee are tax-deductible.
I can't make it to Yankee Stadium on August 21, can I still be involved?
Yes, you can register as a Virtual Participant to have an online fundraising page and receive a Runyon 5K t-shirt, medal and goody bag which will be mailed to you after the event. The entry fee is $45.
Can I register friends or family members
at the same time I register?
Yes. After you provide your registration details, just click the blue button that says "Register Another Person" when you get to the Registration Summary page.
Can I run or walk
with family and friends?
Yes, but you must be part of a team in order to be assigned the same start time. Please see Team Information for more details.
If I am no longer able to make it to the
Runyon 5K after registering, can I get a refund or have someone else run/walk
in my place?
No, participation is non-transferrable and registration fees are non-refundable. Your registration fee will become a fully tax-deductible contribution to cancer research. Thank you for understanding.
How do I create a team?
You can create a team when you register online by selecting the option to “Create a Team” – you will become the Team Captain and will be asked to enter the Team Name. Those who wish to join your team can then register by selecting the option to “Join a Team.”
Is there a limit on team size?
No - sign up as many teammates as you can!
How do I join a team?
To join an existing team, select the “Join a Team” option, and search for the team name. Once you find the team you wish to join, click Join, and proceed with registration.
How do I join a team if I am already registered as an individual?
In your Participant Center, click Change Team Membership on the right side of the page. Search by team or captain name, and select Join Team when you see the team you wish to join.
Can I create a new team after I have registered as an individual?
Yes! Please contact us, and we will set the team up for you.
I am a Team Captain - can I enroll all
members of my team at one time?
Yes. If you have a large team of more than 10 people to register, please contact us and we will be happy to assist you.
Can I pay for my
whole team by company check?
Yes, a team can submit one check from its company for every team member’s registration fee.
How do we register our company team if paying by check?
We will provide the Team Captain with a discount code that he or she will need to provide to each team member, who will then enter it when registering online. No credit card information will be required. Please note that discount codes cannot be issued until payment is received, so you will need to confirm the number of team members in advance. We appreciate the extra effort and planning this requires. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you plan to pay by company check.
All of my teammates plan to run
the 5K route, will we have the same start time?
Team members who are running will be assigned the same start time UNLESS a team member indicates that he/she runs a 6- or 7-minute mile pace and would like to run in the Elite Heat.
Some of my teammates
plan to run while others plan to walk, will we all have the same start time?
Yes, teams of runners and walkers will be assigned the same start time, following heats of individual runners and teams of all runners. To ensure everyone's safety, team members who are walking should position themselves in the back of the pack at the start line, while runners should head to the front. Walkers should stay to the right, allowing runners to pass on the left.
Is there a
minimum fundraising requirement?
No, but we still need you to fundraise! Cuts in federal research funding have put us at risk of losing this generation’s best young scientists to other careers. Every dollar you raise will help us sustain and grow our programs. Please help us keep those brilliant minds focused on beating cancer.
Will prizes be awarded to the top fundraisers?
Yes! We have some great fundraising incentive prizes available to reward your efforts! Tickets to see amazing shows on stage – Adele, Bruce Springsteen, or Hamilton – or exciting games on the field – Giants, Jets or Yankees – could be yours!
I saw on the home page that gifts could potentially be matched. How does this match work?
One of our generous donors (a private foundation that prefers to remain anonymous in its charitable endeavors) is challenging us to raise as much money as possible and has agreed to match 1:1 all first-time donations made in support of this year’s Runyon 5K. This means that any new donors you recruit to support your run/walk will have their donations matched, doubling your impact!
I’ve participated in the Runyon 5K before, and my family and friends who supported me in the past plan to donate again. Will their gifts be matched?
The goal of the foundation offering the match is to help us find new donors, so their guidelines state that only new or increased gifts will be matched. If your past supporters increase their giving from last year by any amount, that amount will be matched! For example, if your friend donated $10 to your run/walk last year, but donates $20 this year, $10 of that gift will be matched. Donors who renew their gifts are our champions, and we need their continued support!
Does this match count toward my individual or team fundraising total?
No. The donor’s goal is to help us raise as much money as possible from new sources in support of cancer research, so the amount that is matched will not be added to your fundraising total.
How will this event help fund cancer research?
100% of each donation raised in support of a participant’s run/walk will directly support cutting-edge scientific research. Our low administrative and fundraising costs are paid by Damon Runyon Broadway Tickets and from our endowment.
How do I turn in any pledges collected offline?
If you have collected checks or cash in support of your run/walk, you may submit your collected pledges along with our offline donation form by mail to:
Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation
One Exchange Plaza
55 Broadway, Suite 302
New York, NY 10006
Checks should be made payable to: Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation.
Your pledges will be added to your scrolling total upon receipt. You may also bring collected pledges to the event on August 21. Please be sure to indicate that the donations are in support of your run/walk or submit with a completed donation form so that you receive proper credit.
What is the pledge collection deadline?
Friday, September 16, 2016.
What does Damon
Runyon have to do with the New York Yankees?
The Foundation has a long history with the Yankees: Joe DiMaggio was a member of the Board in the 1950s and Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle were supporters. Damon Runyon himself was a New York writer who began his career as a baseball journalist and revolutionized how the game was covered.
What does Damon Runyon have to do with a
cancer research foundation?
Damon Runyon died from throat cancer in 1946. His good friend, Walter Winchell, renowned journalist and radio commentator, went on his famous radio program and appealed to “Mr. and Mrs. America” for contributions to help fight cancer. The response was overwhelming, enabling Winchell to establish the “Damon Runyon Cancer Memorial Fund” with the mission of supporting the most promising early career scientists across the nation.
Does Damon Runyon
also have a connection to Broadway?
Yes, his beloved Broadway short stories were later transformed into the hit show, Guys & Dolls.
What are the goals of the Foundation?
• Identify and fund the best and brightest early career scientists in cancer research
• Enable risk taking on bold new ideas
• Accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into new diagnostic tools and treatments
