On Saturday, July 15, I will follow in the footsteps of the New York Yankees as part of the ninth annual Damon Runyon 5K at Yankee Stadium – a unique fundraising run/walk that uses the Stadium as its course.
100% of the money I raise will be used by the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation to fund innovative research by today's most brilliant young scientists, who are racing to find the causes and cures for all types of cancer. And, because I am a first time runner, whatever I raise will be matched by an anonymous donor.
Cancer has affected my life in more ways than I wish I had to admit. Just this April, my father passed away after a 6-year long battle with carcinoid, a rare form of cancer that damaged his liver, intestines and stomach. He fought tooth and nail until the very end, and I will forever be proud and blessed by the ways he has inspired me.
My Dad was an avid Yankee fan. We used to sit in our living room watching Yankee games, and between innings he'd tell me stories about the Babe, Yogi Berra, and all the other greats. Whenever we got the chance we'd take the boat from NJ to watch the Yanks play at home; but, trips to New York came to mean visits to the hospital rather than the ballfield. He had plans to go to one more Yankee game with me in this the summer of 2017, but he passed away just weeks before we got the chance.
When I found the Runyon 5k- what it stands for, raises money for, where it takes place- there was no doubt in my mind about signing up. For my mother, a breast cancer survivor, for my boyfriend's sister who is battling leukemia, and for the many other family members and friends who have had to suffer from this disease, I'm thrilled to take every step of these 3.1 miles. Most of all, I'm excited to step onto Yankee field to represent and honor the greatest man (and Yankee fan) I have ever known.
Thank you for all the support you can give me in my journey to raise money for cancer research!
